Who we areStandUp DeKalb is a
community-based coalition comprised of residents of central DeKalb whose
goal is to give voice to the concerns of those who live and commute through
the area of North Druid Hills and Briarcliff roads. We favor development that
benefits the community and the residents of DeKalb County.
Background Info
On July 31, 2007, more than 500
residents met to discuss the sale of public properties for the development of a
mega-mall in central DeKalb County. Less than one month later, citizens joined together to form the "StandUp
DeKalb" coalition. Quality of life issues, some ongoing, that StandUp
DeKalb has focused on:
- Town Briarcliff Project, plans by the Sembler
Company to develop property near the intersection of North Druid Hills
and Briarcliff roads, including public school property and public housing. On January 18,
2008, the DeKalb Board of Education rejected Sembler's purchase offer and
voted to retain ownership of the school property.
- "Garvin Plan", a long term plan for the Briarcliff/North Druid Hills
area, initiated by DeKalb County officials, coordinated through the
Livable Communities Coalition, employing consultant and planning expert,
Alex Garvin and Associates., and paid for primarily by the Sembler
Company.
- Tax Allocation District (TAD) created to capture incremental tax
dollars from the redevelopment of the North Druid Hills/Briarcliff
quadrant. Since then, the Georgia Supreme Court ruled unanimously that
using school funds for noneducation purposes violates the state
Constitution's educational purpose clause.
- Late Nite Establishment Ordinance whose original intent was to help
control the proliferation of late night bars/nightclubs that is occurring
in DeKalb since the City of Atlanta moved their bar closing hours to
2:30am.
- Lecraw Company request to redraw the boundaries of the Toco Hill town
center at North Druid Hills and Clairmont roads for a project that
includes demolition of a seniors-only apartment complex.
- Ashkouti Realty Corporation proposal for a new town center on North
Druid Hills Road opposite Arbor Hills Apartments that includes
single-family homes on North Holly Lane.
- Executive Park owners proposal for a new town center on North Druid
Hills Road and I-85 on the site of a 70-acre office park.
